Peanut Butter and Jelly Cover Image Book Book

Peanut Butter and Jelly / Ben Clanton.

Clanton, Ben, 1988- (author,, illustrator.).

Summary:

"Narwhal and Jelly are back and Narwhal has a new obsession . . . peanut butter! He's so obsessed he even wants to change his name to . . . that's right . . . Peanut Butter! Ever-sensible Jelly isn't so sure that's the best idea, but is all for Narwhal trying new things (instead of just eating waffles all the time, no matter how delicious waffles are). In this third book, Narwhal and Jelly star in three new stories about trying new things, favorite foods and accepting who we are. Always funny and never didactic, this underwater duo charms again through their powerful combination of positive thinking, imagination and joyfulness" -- Amazon.com.

  • Horn Book Guide Reviews : Horn Book Guide Reviews 2019 Spring
In their third graphic novel, Narwhal and Jelly continue their absurdist underwater adventures. Jelly introduces waffle-loving Narwhal to peanut butter, causing a new obsession. Five short sections, including an insert of "delicious facts" and a comic-within-the-comic, offer bite-size segments for young readers. The limited palette of blue, gray, and yellow and the simply sketched but expressive characters add to the book's accessibility. Copyright 2019 Horn Book Guide Reviews.

Gr 1–4—With the help of his anxious jellyfish pal, goofy Narwhal expands his gastronomic horizons in this latest entry in the series. When Jelly discovers that Narwhal's diet consists solely of waffles, he encourages his friend to try a peanut butter cookie. Impressed, Narwhal eats so much peanut butter that he turns yellowish brown, much to Jelly's consternation. All the successful elements of the previous titles are on display: adorably childlike illustrations, absurdist humor, puns galore, and an emphasis on friendship. Clanton divides the book up into several digestible segments, including two pages of brief sea creature facts and a tale penned by Narwhal and Jelly starring their long-running superhero characters Super Waffle and Strawberry Sidekick. Relying on a simple text, the author/illustrator presents yet another tale brimming with whimsy and joy. VERDICT For all juvenile graphic novel collections, especially where the series is popular.—Mahnaz Dar, School Library Journal
